Our team leaves Thursday morning for the big adventure. We will travel to Yosemite, spend Friday seeing the sights, and begin the hike Saturday morning bright and early. My group meets at 3:45 a.m.!!! Then we'll take the 1-hr bus ride to the trail head, snap on our headlamps, and start walking. We hope to reach the base of the dome by lunchtime so we will all have time to ascend the "ladder". If you look closely at this picture, there is an arrow pointing to the cable ladder. Fun times await!
Wikipedia says, "As late as the 1870s, Half Dome was declared "perfectly inaccessible", but it may now be ascended in several different ways. Thousands of hikers reach the top each year by following a trail from the valley floor. The trailhead is only 2 mi from Half Dome itself, but the circuitous route is 8.5 mi long. The final ascent is accomplished by following a pair of metal cables raised on posts up the peak's steep but somewhat rounded east face. The cable route was constructed in 1919." It seems to be quite a popular route, and we are expecting quite a crowd once we get there.
