A 3 hour cruise...

LB & Lori at Coco Cay

Actually it was a 3 night cruise, which turned out to be the perfect length. We left from Miami Friday afternoon, spent Saturday at a private island called Coco Cay, and Sunday in Nassau. Not a bad way to spend the weekend!

Honduras Mission 2012

As you may know, I’ve just returned from a week-long trip to Trujillo, Honduras. Many people have asked me for more info about the trip. (Who did you go with? How did you find out about it? Etc.) So, here are the details! I joined a team from Christ the King Parish in Little Rock, Arkansas. This is their 16th year to do mission work in Trujillo, and most of them have been making this trip for many years! There are also people from South Dakota, California, Colorado, Washington, Florida, Oklahoma and Texas who were with us. (And probably others who I can’t remember off hand.) The team consisted of around 95 - 100 people. I must be honest and say that I never actually counted so I am just going on what I’ve been told. There were doctors, nurses, teenagers, pharmacists, teachers, audiologists, moms, dads and college students among us.

The group broke out into teams every day, including the hearing team, the eye clinic, the hospital/surgery team, the evangelization team, the school team, the Santa Fe Clinic, the MaraƱones Clinic, the Los Leones Clinic, the technology team, the construction team, and the dental clinic! Needless to say, after breakfast as a group we all scattered like birds in different directions from our hotel in Trujillo. Most of the clinics were within a 20-30 minute drive from the hotel. We took buses, trucks, and vans to get where we needed to go. We have a slew of “locals” who work with us to transport us, translate for us, and keep us going in the right direction. I was one of the lucky ones who got to visit every clinic site during the week. Because the hearing team travels to many different villages, we found ourselves near every clinic at least once during the week. Being a first timer, it was neat to see all the clinics in action. One of the people on the trip told me that she’s been going for 9 years and still has never seen the other clinics because she goes to the same one each time!

The flight from Houston to San Pedro Sula is only 3 hours but the drive from San Pedro to Trujillo is 5 or 6 depending on the time of day. Because our team is so large we travel in 3 different groups – early week, Friday and Saturday group. I was in the Saturday group and the day we traveled down there I did not know one of the people traveling with me. However, on the way back I knew all of them! Even though the hearing team has only 2 people, we had plenty of time at meals and at the swimming pool to get to know the other teams pretty well. I thought they did a great job balancing “work” and “play” time during this trip. Instead of working us into the ground each day, they closed the clinics down at a reasonable time so that everyone could get back to the hotel an hour or so before dinner. Of course there were a few exceptions here and there but overall I was grateful that they made sure to have us in at a decent hour. Not to mention the sun sets about 6:30 down there and I don’t think they wanted us out after dark!

Some things that amazed me on this trip were how many horses and cows we saw, as well as chickens, pigs, and ducks. Also, how many people we saw walking around in the towns and villages wearing our mission t-shirt! We have a specific shirt we had to wear every day and we give those to our “locals” as well and to various people who help out or need clothes, etc. So you could be driving down any road and pass somebody wearing the mission shirt… so funny! I could tell you many more things about the Finca, Banana Beach, Tesla, our wonderful hotel, and all the great food we had but I think this is an information overload already so we’ll have to save that conversation for another time. The pictures tell some of the story and I put captions on most of them. Those are the Cliff’s Notes!

Honduras Pictures!

And a poem to boot...

In search of adventure, to Trujillo I flew-
Didn't know what lay ahead until the mountains were in view.
We lived in the moment every step along the way,
Lost track of all time, never knowing the day.

Met people from Vancouver, South Dakota, and the Rock,
Every night after work, to the pool we would flock!
Dinner in the cabana, Pina Coladas and more-
With Doctors and Nurses and Comedians galore.

We pray God will water the seeds we have sown
Among the people of Honduras who we've only briefly known.
Our time was so short and a whirlwind for sure;
We may have looked scattered, but our intentions were pure.

Now as we depart, we'll remember these days
Where we worked and we sweat and we feasted and played.
One thing's for sure as the week comes to an end:
I came among strangers and I left among friends.

BJ's

Well, after months of hoping and waiting and waiting and hoping... BJ's is finally opening in Waco! Ever since I moved here I've been missing BJ's, which you may know is my favorite restaurant. Then one day, the rumors started! But... could they be true??

Well, when a friend of mine told me that she was getting kicked out of her office because they were going to tear down the building to build a BJ's, I knew that it must be true!

I saw the building get demolished, saw them dig the hole, pour the slab, put up the frame. And slowly but surely, it started to take shape. And it was going to be a BJ's indeed!

And here we are, 4 days from the grand opening! I had the privilege of attending a soft opening today for lunch as part of their staff training. Boy was it exciting to finally be at BJ's... in Waco!!!

Go ahead and dream, people. It very well may come true!

Memorial Weekend

Rae and Liv came down for a slumber party. We spent part of Saturday visiting Homestead Heritage and had a great time! Then we got snow cones. YUM!

Visitors

This spring I've noticed a few visitors among the flowers...

Unfortunately they are not exempt from the list of critters that Sadie likes to hunt, torture, chew up and swallow :)

Birthday fun

I recently celebrated my first 29th birthday! It's hard to believe! This picture was taken Friday night in Houston (luckily they didn't have quite 29 candles to put on the cake). Saturday morning I went with my college friend Melissa to Denver for the Women's Final Four! It was an awesome trip, especially since Baylor won the championship. (And since Jenny lives in Denver we got free transportation and lodging!)

We even got a little snowboarding in as well :)
Hope this year doesn't fly by too fast as I am not necessarily looking forward to being 30!

In Texas, February showers bring March flowers!

Spring has sprung exploded! I have loved watching my garden come to life practically on its own. I am blown away by God's handiwork and watching it unfold before my eyes has been awe-inspiring. Even after last summer's drought, the flowers all came back smiling!

Funny story

I was just looking through iPhoto for something totally unrelated to this but when I came across it I was reminded a funny story I just have to share...  When I got these new plates I asked Grandad if he would help me put them on my car because, you know, he likes cars and projects and helping me :)

So as we were putting it on he asked me what Donate Life meant. I told him it meant that I support organ donation and would gladly give my organs away if ever in that position....

Grandad thought about that for a few seconds and came back with, "Well, I hope you never get the chance to donate!"

And that was that.
